Hard cutouts

Removing Backgrounds from Glass, Bottles and Transparent Products

Oct 2026 · minimaxi.design E-Commerce Studio

Glassware, perfume bottles, clear cosmetics packaging, drinks and acrylic stands are the products where one-click background removal fails most visibly. The background shows through the product, so removing it removes part of the product's look as well.

Why transparent products are hard

Shoot to make the edit easy

  1. Shoot on a plain white or light grey background, not a busy one — whatever is behind the glass ends up inside it.
  2. Use two softboxes or strip lights at the sides to create clean edge highlights.
  3. Keep reflections of the room out of the glass with white cards.

Edit workflow

  1. Run background removal and inspect the alpha: the glass body should be semi-transparent, not fully opaque or fully cut.
  2. If the tool cut holes or kept grey patches, regenerate the glass interior on white with a masked edit on inpaint:

Inside the masked glass area, show the bottle as photographed on a pure white background: clear glass, subtle grey refraction at the edges, bright vertical highlights on both sides. Keep the label, cap and liquid colour exactly unchanged.

  1. For a new scene, generate it on product relighting and ask for refraction of the new background through the glass, plus a soft, slightly transparent shadow.
  2. Check the edges at 200%: a thin dark outline is a sign of a leftover fringe.

Cost

A transparent product usually needs one cutout plus one or two masked passes: $0.13 for the cutout and $0.032 per Qwen pass at list price.

Frequently asked questions

Why does background removal ruin glass products?

Because the background is visible through the glass. A hard mask either keeps the old background inside the product or cuts holes in it.

How do I keep a glass bottle looking like glass on white?

Preserve the edge highlights and a subtle grey refraction at the edges, and add a soft transparent shadow. Regenerate the interior on white with a masked edit if needed.

Does Amazon allow reflections under glass products?

A soft, natural shadow is generally fine on the main image; a strong mirror reflection is safer on secondary images.
