Upscaling Product Images to 4K: What Marketplaces Need and What AI Can Fix
Shoppers zoom. Marketplaces enable that zoom only above a resolution threshold, and supplier images are often below it. An AI upscaler can close the gap — or it can invent texture that is not on the real product. This guide covers both sides.
Resolution targets by marketplace
| Platform | Practical target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 2000 px+ longest side | 1000 px minimum enables zoom; max 10,000 px |
| Shopify | 2048 × 2048 px | Square recommended; up to 4472 × 4472 px / 20 MB |
| Etsy | 2000 px shortest side | Thumbnails crop to roughly 4:3 |
| Taobao / Tmall | 800 × 800 px+ | Zoom from about 700 px; 750 × 1000 for 3:4 main images |
| TikTok Shop | 1200 × 1200 px | 1:1, at least 600 × 600; up to 9 images |

When upscaling helps
- Sharp but small source images (supplier 800 px images you need at 2000 px).
- Final composites from edit models that output at 1 megapixel.
- Old catalogue photos — use photo restore first if they are scanned or compressed.
When it hurts
- Blurry sources: an upscaler will sharpen blur into invented detail — fake fabric weave, fake wood grain. That misrepresents the product.
- Small text: upscalers can turn unreadable text into confident wrong text. Fix text with an edit model or real artwork.
- Upscaling twice: upscale once, at the end of the pipeline.
Workflow
- Do every edit (cutout, scene, text) at native resolution.
- Upscale the final image once on upscale to the platform target.
- Compare a 100% crop of a texture area with the physical product.
- Export at high JPEG quality, sRGB.
For product clips, the same logic applies — video upscale runs after the edit, at $0.0060 per second at list price.
Cost
An image upscale is $0.036 at list price. Upscaling all eight images of a listing costs about eight times that.
常見問題
What resolution do product images need for zoom?
Amazon enables zoom from 1000 px on the longest side; most sellers target 2000 px. Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 px.
Can AI upscaling fix a blurry photo?
It will make it look sharper, but by inventing detail. For product listings that can misrepresent texture; reshoot blurry images when possible.
Should I upscale before or after editing?
After. Edit at native resolution, then upscale the final composite once.
How much does an upscale cost?
$0.036 per image at the current list price.
