Flux Kontext vs Qwen Image Edit for Product Photos: Which to Use When
Flux Kontext and Qwen Image Edit are both instruction-based image editors: you give them a photo and a sentence, and they return the edited photo. For e-commerce they are not interchangeable. In our experience the short version is: Flux for scene and light, Qwen for text and precision. The rest of this page is the long version, job by job.
What each model is
- Flux Kontext / Flux 2 (Black Forest Labs). In-context editing models that read a reference image and generate a new image around it. Strong at keeping an object or person consistent while changing the environment, lighting and style. Flux 2 adds multi-reference input and better typography than earlier Flux versions.
- Qwen Image Edit (Alibaba Qwen team). An editing model built on Qwen-Image, known for accurate text rendering in both Latin and Chinese scripts. It distinguishes between "appearance" edits (change only these pixels) and "semantic" edits (re-pose, rotate, restyle), which maps neatly onto product retouching.
Job-by-job comparison
| E-commerce job | Better first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Change the words on packaging | Qwen Image Edit | Renders new text in matching style; handles CJK scripts |
| Remove a sticker, price tag or dust | Qwen Image Edit | Precise local edit; leaves the rest untouched |
| New background / lifestyle scene | Flux Kontext | Better at coherent environments and believable light |
| Relight (golden hour, studio softbox) | Flux Kontext | Re-renders light and shadow around a locked object |
| Recolour one variant (navy → olive) | Qwen Image Edit | Keeps texture; less likely to change shape |
| Flat-lay to on-model | Flux Kontext / Flux 2 | Multi-reference consistency of garment and model |
| Infographic with callout text | Qwen Image Edit | Spelling accuracy matters more than mood |
Prompt examples that work
Qwen — label text change:
Change the text "VANILLA" on the front label to "COCONUT". Keep the same font, weight, colour, curvature and position. Do not change anything else in the image.
Flux Kontext — scene swap:
Place this exact sneaker on a wet concrete pavement at dusk with soft neon reflections. Keep the shoe's shape, logo, stitching and colours identical. Match the light direction and add a natural contact shadow.
Note the shared pattern: the instruction, then the explicit lock list. Both models drift less when you name what must stay.

Frequently asked questions
Is Qwen Image Edit better than Flux Kontext?
Neither is better overall. Qwen is usually the better first choice for text and precise local edits; Flux Kontext for new scenes, lighting and multi-reference consistency.
Which one handles Chinese or Japanese packaging text?
Qwen Image Edit. It was trained with strong Chinese text rendering and generally keeps CJK characters legible where other editors produce near-miss glyphs.
Can I use both on one image?
Yes, and it is often the best result: Flux for the scene, then Qwen for a final text or detail pass on the composite.
What does one edit cost?
At current list prices, $0.032 on Qwen Image Edit Plus and $0.038 on Flux Kontext dev, per output image.
